Final workshop : Passive Samplers  Intercomparison Exercise

In the context of a scientific collaboration between expert laboratories, an intercomparison exercise on various passive samplers (PSs) was organized in summer 2010 by French public institutions belonging to the French reference laboratory for water monitoring, AQUAREF. The general objective of this study was to assess the potential function and the efficiency of PSs for priority pollutants monitoring in surface and coastal waters in the context of the Water Framework Directive and Marine Strategy Framework Directive (WFD and MSFD). More specifically, the goals were: (i) to evaluate the comparability and variability of measurements of selected priority substances with PSs, (ii) to evaluate the suitability of these samplers implemented in different aquatic environments to sample selected substances, and (iii) to demonstrate the applicability of such tools to water basin managers and routine laboratories. This intercomparison exercise was focused on the measurement of selected metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and pesticides in surface waters. Various PSs were used and compared at 2 rivers sites and one marine lagoon. A total of 24 laboratories participated.
This final workshop was organized to present the design of this exercise and also selected significant outputs
. This was also the opportunity to discuss on the knowledge and harmonization of practices for the use of passive sampling, especially for priority chemical monitoring and regulatory programs in compliance with the Water Framework Directive and Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
